Sausage Party – Movie Review
Sausage Pary – R
Release Date: Fri 12 Aug 2016
Sausage Party is a 3D-animated R-rated comedy starring Seth Rogen as a hot dog named Frank. Frank lives in a pack of hot dogs in a giant supermarket and dreams of the day when a god (shoppers) will take him and his hot dog bun girlfriend Brenda (Kristen Wiig) to “the promised land,” which is to say out of the supermarket which the food all believes is some kind of blissful paradise.
As the trailer shows, the reality is that the humans are unaware of the sentience of the food. They mangle, kill and consume them as the food screams and react with horror to the whole situation. Unfortunately, the trailer is about as much as the movie has to offer. The profanity, sexual innuendo (hot dogs and buns, you guys) and over-the-top violent “deaths” of the anthropomorphic food is a plateau that never really improves or goes anywhere.
If you thought the trailer was amusing, you’re probably done experiencing Sausage Party. The rest of the running time is boring variations on that theme. The amount of effort and talent behind the animation makes it even more egregious that the script needed a lot more work to justify it being more than a short film.
