The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water – Movie Review
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water – PG
Release Date: Fri 06 Feb 2015
The second theatrical SpongeBob SquarePants movie sees the town of Bikini Bottom thrown into disarray when the secret formula for the Krabby Patty is stolen by a pirate. The movie sees SpongeBob team up with Plankton as they put aside their differences to get the formula back.
The trailer played up a combination of live-action people with 3D-animated characters. The “Out of Water” portion of the title refers to this style, where SpongeBob and friends go up to the surface and interact with live people, including Antonio Banderas’ formula-stealing pirate. What the trailer does wrong is misrepresent that the entire movie is in this style rather than the traditional 2D style of the Nickelodeon show. The section shown in the trailer is less than 20 minutes long and does not start until an hour into the movie. Everything else is 2D and true to the show’s animation.
That is to say, if you’re a fan of the show you will likely enjoy the movie. Essentially a massive episode, the movie has plenty of meta jokes for adults and adventure for everyone. A completely bizarre sequence sees SpongeBob and Plankton travel far into the future where a talking dolphin is in charge of the universe. The downside of the trailer is that if you’ve seen it, you have seen the best of the last third of the movie as it’s essentially a highlight reel of that single sequence. That said, both the 2D and 3D animation is very well done and looks great in whichever format you choose to see it.
Yes it may have taken eleven years for a second SpongeBob movie, but “are you ready kids?” You know the answer.
Aaron and I saw it in the theater and had a discussion in the car:
