I don’t normally talk about spoilers in my written reviews. Please indulge me as I explain the opening scenes of Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 to explain the tone of this movie.

In 2009’s original film, Blart (Kevin James) is trying to work up the courage to start a romantic relationship with a woman who works at the mall. Here, we’re told right off the bat that she left him after being married for SIX DAYS. We then cut right to Blart’s mother being hit and killed by a milk truck. Both of these are played for laughs and to set up a subplot where Blart’s daughter (the last person left in his life) feels guilty about leaving him to go to college.

This movie effectively made his dream girl from the first movie into a retroactively terrible person, and killed his mother just so we could have a contrived “you can’t go to school all the way in California” subplot.

The only real good news about this unfunny, unnecessary movie is that it manages to stay geared toward the audience for slapstick cartoon comedies. It’s slightly less violent than Tom and Jerry but has the same non-existent lasting consequences. It’s a Happy Madison production that steers clear of uncomfortable sex jokes or toilet humor. In other words, it’s a PG-rated comedy that will only be funny to a younger audience but won’t offend parents or grandparents that gave them the ride to the theater.

That said, I cannot recommend this movie to anyone. The trailer shows all the good(?) stuff.
